You know more than you think you do.
It's true.
And there are people out there willing to pay you for that knowledge.
To teach them what you know.
Perhaps someone has said to you...
"you are so knowledgeable on [insert topic]",
or "I wish I could do [insert activity] like you."
These are subtle cues on topics people want to learn from you.
The key is finding that secret sauce topic where your expertise and passion meets the market need.
If you're done struggling to land consistent clients, read on.
I'm going to teach you the secret to consistent client work.
This is the approach I've used in my own marketing consulting business for over 10 years.
It's led to consistent 6-figure income year over year along with...
Zero stress about where my next client was coming from (in fact, I regularly turn down client work)...
Zero cold calling, cold emails, or paid outreach....
Zero tedious sales calls...
My secret?
Teach what you know.
Find a group of people who want to learn what you know. And teach it to them.
You don't need a degree.
Or to be a professional public speaker.
And you really don't need to have any prior experience teaching to get started.
You just need a determination to teach people what they are missing.
The knowledge you have can improve their health, wealth and relationships.
It can literally change someone's life.
I became obsessed with teaching small business owners digital marketing strategies because I could see they were stressed, struggling and completely overwhelmed. I just knew that if they implemented a few simple strategies, their business could double or triple its revenue.
So I made it my mission to take complicated marketing concepts and make them simple. And then teach those simplified topics to people who need help with them.
I taught people what I was learning, without charging for it. I set up a YouTube channel. Hopped on calls. Wrote blog posts. Sent emails. Met for coffee. I shared as much of my knowledge as I could without expecting anything in return.
I did anything and everything to bridge the gap between these small business owners and the larger digital marketing concepts.
I kept a spreadsheet with all the questions that I received from people on digital marketing, and addressed each and every one the best I could.
And the craziest thing happened.
What I gave I received back 10x fold.
My mind was blown...clients were coming out of the woodwork wanting to work with me!
And I never struggled to get a client again.
(Pssst, have I told you I don't have a marketing degree? Oh, I don't have a teaching degree either.)
I'm not some super duper sales person or the most brilliant digital marketer to have walked this earth.
What I am is passionate about sharing my knowledge and refusing to give into that little voice that whispers..."who are you to teach this stuff??"
My answer?
I'm Megan. And it seems people like to hear what I have to say. And it also seems like it's helping people. So I'm going to go back to work, thankyouverymuch.
Here's why you should start teaching what you know too:
- You become the go-to expert. Your students get to meet you, learn from you and that builds trust. You will be the first person they think of when they need help or have a question.
- You are building your network. You are exposing yourself to people you may have never met before and are growing your reach.
- You establish a personal brand. You become known for the topic you teach and become the authority on it.
- You hone your expertise. Teaching a topic deepens your own understanding of it.
- You build credibility. When you're starting out it can be difficult to not feel like an imposter. Teaching helps you build credibility in the eyes of others and yourself.
There IS demand for your knowledge. Plus, there's no one else in the world who will teach it like you. Isn't that exciting!?
How are some places to start looking for people to teach:
- Your personal network.
- Local Facebook Groups.
- Your Chamber of Commerce.
- Local volunteer organizations in your area.
- Your program manager at your local community college.
- Go "Live" on LinkedIn or Instagram. Try teaching a 5-min micro-lesson.
Don't sweat it if only one person shows up (been there, done that!) it's not the end of the world. In fact, lucky them. Never cancel. It's all practice and building momentum in your business.
Make sure that you pitch your services at the end. It can be as simple as where you students can find you online and how to connect with you. Always collect emails and add them to your newsletter list!
Next, discover some topics to teach:
- Use this this free keyword tool to see what people are searching for.
- This tool helps you brainstorm different topics to teach while confirming there is demand.
- Let's say I want to teach a class on email marketing. I type in "email marketing" and get the following results:
A couple things to note for each search:
- You want the volume to be over 1k.
- The difficulty should be Low
This process is meant to be fun! It's amazing the opportunities that magically appear after you decide to step outside your comfort zone.
So...what's one thing you could teach right now that would help people?
